My passion for baking began when I was diagnosed with severe food allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, and eggs at age three. Due to there often not being safe food for me at birthday parties and family gatherings, I started baking my own treats, but still, I experienced the common reality of kids with food allergies, not feeling included.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, I began baking birthday cakes for friends and saw how much receiving a birthday cake could mean during a difficult time. That experience inspired me to start baking birthday cakes for children experiencing housing insecurity through Family Promise. I wanted every child to feel seen, celebrated, and important on their birthday.
As my work grew, I expanded from birthday cakes into bake sales, custom orders, and larger fundraising events to support children and families facing food and housing insecurity. However, I realized that I wanted to bring back the heart of where my passion for baking came from: my food allergies.
Now, my organization, Baking a Difference for Kids, focuses on supporting children's mental health by reminding children who face added challenges, particulary food/housing insecurity and food allergies, that they deserve to feel seen and celebrated on their birthday. To date, Baking a Difference for Kids has given 700+ children birthday celebrations and has raised $8,000+ for families experiencing homelessness.
